"Each artist has a certain agenda, a way through which his or her work can be translated into something meaningful and thought-provoking. in regards to mimmo rubino, this has meant researching the boundaries of visual identity and ways to live and build art. the quest has led to the development of a project titled ‘Standard & Poor’s (Italia Mobile). The experimental project combines the mediums of spray paint and photography. ’as usual I have no clear results. just some pictures to show what I’m doing in this ‘middle land’, mixing up paint, photography and friends,’ says Rubino. three caravans have been painted to replicate the color scheme of the country’s flag. the added hues bring life to the site, intervening to contrast the surrounding remnants and unwanted goods."

"Rub Kandy is melting the distinction between the street and the gallery further with a new installation in Lichtenberg, a neighborhood in Berlin. Incorporating imagery evoking Berlin’s not so distant past and it’s administration under Soviet authority, Rub Kandy is placing powerful memory-jolting symbols unusually in public space, and letting the associations be determined without providing context.continue on brooklynstreetart.com

Using the principals of anamorphosis, a monument to venezuelan politician and emancipator simon bolivar is given a reframed approach.
mimmo rubino uses the vocabulary of space to address the social by filling the voids of a stair to resemble pyramidal form, a traditional symbol of power and marker of conquest-tinged victory. the steps are rendered unusable and need be traversed in a way that ruptures the original circulation of the space. while the work was presented as part of the biennial del sur in panama, the intervention feels like an unsanctioned reclamation of public space, a fitting tribute a sculptural glorification of the revolutionary liberator of latin americafrom imperial spain, a man that later declared himself a dictator. the dichotomy of the independence leader-turned-despot is reflected in the unabashed occupation of the plaza.

Artists with a point of view: from Georges Rousse to Rub Kandy

A bright red rectangle stands out on the walls of a building blackened by fire. This is a photograph by Georges Rousse. At first glance, it looks as if the geometric form has been digitally added to the picture — but don't be fooled. In fact, it took about a week for Georges Rousse to create this spectacular rectangle in the "station sanitaire maritime" in Marseille. The illusion involved in Georges Rousse’s artwork is not digital, but optical: the colorful geometric is only fully visible from a specific point of view. Out of this viewpoint, the perfect shape deconstructs itself for the viewer.

AUSTERITY WILL SET YOU FREE

"A Pinata Party. Picking over the carcass. Reena Virk. A girl, fourteen, caught in a deep plunge of self-esteem. She just wanted to be part of the gang. The cool club. But she became a victim of adolescent ritual. Virk is like Greece. A people slightly foreign to mainstream northern Europe, its people a little darker and swarthier, more Mediterranean. Ostensibly, Virk lived in an idyllic sector just outside Victoria, British Columbia, an ideal middle-class neighborhood. It began when she was lured to the park. Greece was lured to the park. Offered cheap credit, a kind of subsidy to consume European goods, running a deficit funded by the North. The alpha female states. For Virk, it began when someone stubbed out a cigarette on her forehead, which began a sequence of beating and torture than finished the following dawn with her death. When she was found a week later submerged under water, all that was left was a few scraps of underwear. Greece is also being beaten and tortured. Not part of the gang. Used. Its expendable."
